In the end the MMO I keep coming back to is GuildWars 2. Shallow, I know, but what can I say? At the other end of the spectrum is ESO with extremely nice visuals, but those looks can't make up for its many other failings.

More recent attempts to get back into it failed after mere minutes, I have to admit, due to its dated look. WoW was my first experience of the genre, so it was pretty magical for me for quite some time. Both games look very nice graphically too. I think you can actually solo a lot of content up to a point too but where the game shines is in the group content with like-minded players.

That game still could be a lot of fun with friends though taking their time together. The thing I didn't care for there was people's tendency to blow through the dungeons since by the time I was doing them, they were for the umpteenth time and just wanted to get the reward of faction and move on but i wanted to take it all in and hear what the DM had to say in parts, etc.

The same also applies for their Dungeons and Dragons Online which has a Mac client too. I am not a fan of free to play games but I did think they did it well in this case. I also liked the pay as you go for content approach there which then permanently unlocked it for alts. Since it has a lot of story and scripted stuff it had more of an RPG feel which I liked. It's been a while but when I played it the Mac client ran very well for me and it was enjoyable to play. No hassles.I'm pretty burned out on MMOs but I'd second the LoTRO suggestion. On Steam, your games stay up-to-date by themselves.
